Hard a-Lee!

22x28 inches, oil on linen

Imagined near-encounter between HMS Bounty and a sailboat of the San Francisco Bird Class.  The Bounty was constructed from the original ship's drawings in 1960 for MGM studios' Mutiny on the Bounty with Marlon Brando.  It is now owned by the HMS Bounty Organization LLC, which is dedicated to keeping the ship sailing and using her as a vehicle for teaching the nearly lost arts of square rigged sailing and seamanship.  The Bird Class of sailboats were built after World War I, based on the recommendations of a committee of Bay Area sailing clubs, for “an affordable, swift, racing cruiser that can charge through the blustery, choppy conditions of the San Francisco Bay... a boat that can fly across the foam topped waves like, say, a bird.”   Painting based on photographs taken by the artist during the 2008 Tall Ships Festival. Golden Gate Bridge in the background.
